Zurich, 14 November 2025. Power-to-X (PtX) technologies are crucial for the energy transition. By converting renewable electricity into storable energy carriers such as hydrogen, synthetic fuels or methane, they contribute to the decarbonisation of various economic sectors and to a more sustainable and resilient energy system.
In order to exploit the full potential of PtX technologies and enable Switzerland to achieve its energy transition goals, coordinated efforts by research institutions, industry, civil society and public administration are required. To contribute to these efforts, the Swiss Power-to-X Collaborative Innovation Network SPIN and the Coalition for Green Energy & Storage CGES have developed Switzerland's first interactive Power-to-X Tracker.
Why visibility is important
The tracker increases the visibility of the energy transition. In Switzerland, more than 50 PtX projects are already underway, including research projects at universities, but many of them are still unknown outside specialist circles. That is now set to change: the Swiss Power-to-X Tracker provides a comprehensive overview of all known PtX projects throughout the country.
"The tracker facilitates collaboration by providing a structured database that promotes synergies between stakeholders and supports decision-making," say Christoph Sutter and Antonello Nesci, co-directors of CGES.
Martin Bäumle, National Councillor and Co-President of SPIN, adds: "Power-to-X technologies are the key to defossilising our economy. With the tracker, we are creating transparency, strengthening collaboration and helping to turn promising ideas into scalable solutions. Reliable data can help policymakers adapt regulations and support investors in identifying new opportunities."
A growing innovation landscape
The Power-to-X Tracker covers projects in Switzerland that integrate PtX technologies and have progressed beyond laboratory trials to demonstration and commercial scale, or are planned to do so. While SPIN collects the data, CGES focuses on visualisation.
The resulting map shows Switzerland's diverse project landscape, with currently 37 project proposals in 19 cantons covering various technologies such as hydrogen production, synthetic fuels, methanol synthesis and carbon capture. Some individual projects are still missing data, which will be added in the coming weeks. Development is very dynamic.
According to the Power-to-X Tracker, operational projects with an installed capacity of 14 MW are expected to be available by autumn 2025, with more than 70 organisations actively working to advance PtX solutions throughout Switzerland.
Visibility, collaboration and impact
With the acceleration of the energy transition, Switzerland has the opportunity to position itself as a leader in PtX technologies.
The collaboration between SPIN and CGES is an important step towards a more visible and connected Power-to-X landscape in Switzerland. The launch of the interactive tracker will give stakeholders and the public easier access to information on how PtX technologies are being used across the country.
This tool will also serve as a central hub for monitoring developments, promoting collaboration and supporting the dissemination of PtX technologies.
"Transparency is crucial in a decentralised innovation ecosystem such as Switzerland," says Alejandro Nuñez-Jimenez, Chair of the CGES Science and Technology Committee. "The Power-to-X Tracker provides a solid foundation for connecting initiatives and accelerating the transition to sustainable energy," adds Peter Metzinger, Co-Managing Director of SPIN.
The map will be presented and discussed on 21 November at the CGES annual event at Swissgrid in Aarau. Anyone wishing to attend can register via this link: https://tinyurl.com/ms7ra5tp.
The tracker is accessible via the CGES website: https://cges.ch/en/projects.htm. The map will be updated twice a year. Anyone wishing to add a Power-to-X project to the map or add details can visit https://spin-together.ch/#database-input and send a pre-formatted email from there.
About SPIN
The Swiss Power-to-X Collaborative Innovation Network SPIN is the network of Swiss Power-to-X networks. It brings together leading players from industry, science, politics and civil society to promote Power-to-X technologies in Switzerland. SPIN focuses on improving framework conditions, networking members to create synergies and removing barriers to innovation and investment. By promoting collaboration and visibility, SPIN aims to make Switzerland an important centre for sustainable synthetic fuels, hydrogen and technologies for decarbonising industry.
About CGES
CGES is a Swiss coalition for green energy and storage founded by the ETH Domain. It brings together partners from industry, science and the public sector to promote collaboration and develop flagship projects that drive the energy transition.
